The WIRTGEN GROUP machines are intelligent machines due to the integration of telematics and digitalization, which helps to maintain an optimum balance between performance, quality and costs. The Group supports fleet and service management with the intelligent WITOS FleetView telematics system. WITOS Paving optimizes paving processes in road construction. With WITOS, the WIRTGEN GROUP customers benefit from the data collection. The WIRTGEN GROUP not only connects its customers with their construction equipment but also with their construction projects.

Emphasizing on the technological trends in the earthmoving equipment industry, Ramesh Palagiri, Managing Director & CEO, Wirtgen India Pvt Ltd. said, “With its innovative, high-performance and cost-efficient products and technologies, the WIRTGEN GROUP leads the world market in road and mineral technologies. All the machines offered are equipped with Computer-assisted automated features which not only optimize operating processes and machine productivity but also improve operator performance, as an optional or embedded technology. Intelligent information and diagnostic systems additionally support and relieve the operator, resulting in a faster and more efficient way of working. Our customer-oriented development expertise is a guarantee of innovations tailored to the needs of the market.”

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) is encouraging the implementation of a ‘Value Engineering Program’ to promote the use of new, emerging and advanced technologies. The construction of roads by utilising the plastic wastes which are a green initiative by the government also requires advanced technology. In recent years, some of the Indian states have also initiated proposals to adopt advanced technologies like ‘Intelligent Compaction Measurement Systems’ to support quality monitoring programs in road construction. The government existing codes and specs are quite supportive of advanced technologies.

From the Indian perspective, construction is one of the least digitized industries compared to western world. However, now things are changing as equipment manufacturers are offering advanced functionalities such as GPS, data collection, condition monitoring, secure remote maintenance, connectivity options and much more. “With this, the barriers for adopting new technologies are falling; however, it would take some time to reach automation levels deployed in the western world. Programs like Value Engineering from MORTH have already paved the Road for Adoption of New technologies,” opines Palagiri.

Going forward, the construction of large infrastructure projects would need performance tracking on various parameters, connected to IoT (Internet of things) and maximum optimization of the machinery. Talking about the various initiatives undertaken by the government, Palagiri adds, “The government is focussing to increase the road connectivity by increasing the length of national highway, expressway, economic corridors, industrial corridors, village roads (PMGSY) etc. The Indian government is also encouraging usage of innovative materials, automation and machine control technologies in the construction sector in order to improve efficiency and lower the impact on environment. The future trend indicate that the road construction will increase in India and new technologies will be required to fulfil this need.”
