At present, 75% of the work of Pune Metro project is completed
Pune Metro has two corridors. Corridor 1 PCMC to Swargate (11.04 Km) and corridor 2 Vanaz to Ramwadi (15.7 km), a total length of 33.2 km and have 30 stations. It has 5 underground stations & 25 elevated stations. The underground stretch is 6km from Shivaji Nagar to Swargate. And, Civil Court is the interchange station of both corridors.

How useful do think are the TBMs for projects while tunneling in its present projects?
Pune Metro has two corridors. Corridor 1 PCMC to Swargate (11.04 Km) and corridor 2 Vanaz to Ramwadi (15.7 km), a total length of 33.2 km and have 30 stations. It has 5 underground stations & 25 elevated stations. The underground stretch is 6km from Shivaji Nagar to Swargate. And, Civil Court is the interchange station of both corridors. The total cost of the project is Rs. 11,420 Cr. At present, 75% of the work of the Pune Metro project is completed. On 6th March 2022,
Hon’ble PM Modi inaugurated the Pune Metro project and the commercial operation from PCMC to Phugewadi and Vanaz to Garware College has started. The PM also laid the foundation stone for the Pune Metro project in December 2016.
What are the machines used by Pune Metro Rail presently in its projects?
Piling Rig Machine: The machine is used for making piling foundations when the open foundation is not possible. The machine is also used for secant piling when deep excavation is required for underground station construction.
Poclain & JCB: These are general-purpose machines used for digging the open foundations.
Transit Mixture & Batching Plant: For making concrete and transportation of concrete to various places.
Launching Girders: For launching segments that are part of elevated viaducts.
Cranes of various capacities: Cranes are widely used in casting yards, transport of debris from underground station shafts, erection of Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) structures, etc.
Control Blasting Machine: Mainly used for the underground station and NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) work.
Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM): For digging underground tunnels as well as laying & fixing tunnel segments.
What are the challenges faced while using TBM Machines in its projects?
Pune Metro has employed 3 TMBs made by Terra Tec. The machines are named after the famous rivers passing through Pune city, Mula, Mutha & Pavana. A single TBM machine is 120 metres long and weighs 450 tons. The machine is electrically operated and requires an uninterrupted high-capacity electrical power supply.
The machine employed at the Pune metro is an Earth-Pressure-Balance type machine. The digging diameter of the cutting head is 5.8 mts. Due to the long length of the machine, it is lowered in parts to make an assembly at the tunnel bottom. Similarly, the machine while taking it out of the tunnel has to be dismantled and removed in parts.
How useful do think are the TBMs for projects while tunneling in its present projects?
TBMs are technologically sophisticated machines that are used the world over for tunnel requirements of longer lengths. Metro underground projects evidently do not have options other than TBM for making underground tunnels. The TBM machines not only make the tunnel but also places the pre-casted rings to make the tunnel earthquake resistant and long-lasting. Pune Metro project has also opted for TBM for its 6 km underground stretch.
