At RDC, our goal is to transition towards utilizing diesel-free machinery.
Anesh Gaikwad, Assistant General Manager – Distribution, RDC Concrete India
You were the first buyer of the Liugong 820TE 2-ton wheel loader. Tell us something about it.
A diesel-free plant which are aligned with all ESG norms has always been our aim. Diesel is required for two key purposes in our plant: powering the loader that moves materials between locations and serving as backup for our diesel generator during power outages.
To achieve our vision, we explored electric alternatives. Recognizing China’s rapid progress in electric vehicles, we engaged with the Liugong team. During discussions, they mentioned their upcoming launch of an electric loader. Without hesitation, we committed to purchasing the first one.
This marked the beginning of our journey towards a diesel-less plant. Our primary objective remained clear: embracing sustainability without compromising efficiency.
What are the features in this 820TE electric wheel loader from the user point of view?
The first advantage lies in diesel management. Typically, operating a diesel loader entails the hassle of acquiring and refilling diesel manually. However, with this loader, akin to charging a mobile phone, I can simply plug it in. It can operate for five to seven hours straight, aligning perfectly with my operational needs. Thus, the burden of refuelling is eliminated. Moreover, the machine offers a backup duration of four to five hours, precisely meeting my usage requirements.
Another noteworthy benefit is the swift charging time. This machine requires only 45 to 50 minutes to charge from 20% to 100% capacity. This quick recharge capability is invaluable, especially during peak operational periods. It allows for a rapid turnaround, enabling uninterrupted workflow. This feature perfectly complements our industry demands, making it the ideal choice for us.
Beyond these pivotal advantages, the machine boasts other notable features. For instance, it offers a larger bucket capacity compared to traditional diesel models, enhancing its efficiency. Additionally, the torque output is notably higher, further improving its performance. These combined features make it the most suitable and efficient machine for our industrial needs.
Are there any challenges that you might have encountered?
Currently, we’ve been utilizing this machine for three months, and so far, we haven’t encountered any significant challenges. Everything promised and outlined in their brochure has been delivered, with some aspects even surpassing expectations—like the charging time, which is quicker than stated. However, one hurdle we’re facing is the inability to register the vehicle due to pending implementation of certain standards for electric machines. We’ll need to monitor that situation closely. Additionally, while the performance has been impressive thus far, the true test of durability and reliability typically comes after a year or two of use. Nonetheless, our operators are pleased with the machine’s performance, noting its superior power compared to a diesel counterpart.
How do you look at the operator comfortability in this machine?
I recently conducted a video interview with one of our operators in Raipur, although I wasn’t physically present there. Watching the footage of the video, I couldn’t help but feel elated. The operator expressed great satisfaction with the machine, emphasizing its smooth performance and comprehensive functionality. Being a diesel-less machine, he highlighted its simplicity compared to diesel-powered ones, remarking on the minimal challenges involved. According to him, the absence of diesel eliminates many potential issues, leading to a hassle-free experience and a significant reduction in pressure problems. He concluded by expressing his contentment with the machine, grateful for the absence of diesel-related headaches.
Whenever a new machine is launched, the operator might need training. So, how do you look at the training aspect?
When we finalized the deal with Liugong for this electric machine, it was a unique acquisition; no one else had a machine like it. We made it clear to them that we needed thorough training, and they were true to their word. They provided us with a trainer who was dedicated and committed to our success.
Whether it was providing a trainer or training our existing operators, they fulfilled their promises. Their personnel were present at our plant for seven days, closely monitoring the operators and ensuring they were proficient. Not only did they train our operators, but they also provided hands-on support when needed. Thanks to their guidance, one of our operators has now become a supervisor and is actively training others. We are extremely pleased with the quality and effectiveness of the training provided by Liugong.
How do you look at the existing regulatory and environmental considerations for electric machines?
In today’s industrial space, virtually every industry is shifting towards electric machinery. Here, we are actively pursuing additional initiatives to integrate electric vehicles into our operations. We have already implemented electric cars and scooters for our employees, while electric three-wheelers are in use at our manufacturing plant. Our focus lies firmly on electric vehicles, positioning us at the forefront of this transition.
We are committed to being early adopters of electric technology, actively seeking out opportunities such as electric transit mixers. Our goal is to ensure that all trucks in our fleet transition to electric models. Currently, we have seven c in operation. Not only have we procured these ourselves, but we have also encouraged our vendors to follow suit, resulting in additional purchases now available for rental. We have finalized plans for an additional loaders in near future. Our Target is to replace all our diesel loaders with electric loaders soon.
How do you look at the future of electric machines in RDC?
At RDC, our goal is to transition towards utilizing diesel-free machinery. With nearly 107 plants in operation, our aim is for all our facilities to operate without diesel reliance. When I refer to “diesel-less,” I mean that electric loaders and other equipment used in our operations should be exclusively electric-powered.
Our vision aligns with global trends towards electric machinery, and we believe it’s essential for RDC to stay at the forefront of this movement. We take pride in being pioneers in this transition, setting an example not only for our organization but also for our nation. As we contribute to nation-building efforts, it’s crucial to prioritize environmentally sustainable practices in all aspects of our operations.
What is your maintenance and after-sales initiatives?
It’s akin to training, really. We have only been using it for three months. But whatever they pledged, they have delivered on. They have created a specialized task force for all maintenance activities, complete with a WhatsApp communication group. So, if any issues arise, the services personnel in that group responds promptly. As of now, I’m content with the after-sales support they are providing.
