As a leading provider of port and material handling equipment in India, TIL sees a lot of new business opportunities coming up in the near future.

TIL is engaged in the design, manufacture and marketing of a comprehensive range of port and material handling solutions, supported by an integrated after-sales support. Recognized as a market leader in mobile cranes and reach stackers, TIL’s product portfolio includes an extensive range of mobile cranes, lattice boom crawler cranes, reachstackers, container handlers, forklifts and RTG cranes, in addition to other products. “The new regulatory changes will certainly add a lot of dynamism to the port sector, with improved investments and liquidities,” states Anil Bhatia, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, TIL

What has been the growth scenario, including investmen in the port sector for the last couple of years?
India’s port sector is certainly in its best growth phase right now. Containerized trade recorded the highest growth last year, reaching as much as 10% in Q3 of 2017 as against a CAGR of 4% from 2007 – 2017. The government’s investment plans in ports sector are also very aggressive – including 10 coastal economic regions as part of the development plans, along with the ambitious Sagarmala project. These zones would be converted into manufacturing hubs and could span 300–500 km of coastline. The government is also looking to develop the inland waterway sector with the help of private investment – as an alternative to roads and railway routes, to connect the nation’s ports with its hinterlands.

How do you assess the positive impact of the latest developments in the port sector?
The new regulatory changes will certainly add a lot of dynamism to the port sector, with improved investments and liquidities. In the long run that will translate into better earnings and higher margins for logistics providers. As a leading provider of port and material handling equipment in India, TIL sees a lot of new business opportunities coming up in the near future.

There has also been a stress on freedom to deploy upgraded capacity equipment, facilities, and technologies to achieve higher productivity and improved utilization of assets. What will be the impact of this on the cargo handling methodologies?
Constant technological innovation has been at the heart of TIL’s operations since inception. Our core competencies lie in design and manufacturing,

which is embodied in all our products – those manufactured in-house and others that we offer in alliance with our global technology partners. So naturally, with the port sector opening up and the increased customer focus on higher productivity and machine uptime, we expect a substantial surge in the demand for our container handling equipment like reachstackers and rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes.

Globally, there has been a shift towards highly energy efficient container handling systems, automation of port activities etc? How the scenario does look like in India?
There is a similar trend domestically as well and our products are equipped to meet those needs.

Since service and quick response to reduce downtime are essential, what are the steps initiated by TIL to optimize the same?
In order to augment customer satisfaction and ensure enhanced productivity, TIL’s product offerings are integrated with a reliable customer support service, by way of expert field service personnel located in close proximity of job sites and spare parts depots spread across the country for easy off-the-shelf availability of spares. Maintenance contract packages from TIL – aimed at ‘preventive’ and ‘predictive’ maintenance – are tailored to customer needs,

regardless of the machine, its age or application. Our customized Customer Support Agreements (CSA) not only prevents machine breakdowns but also increases machine efficiency in order to help the customer achieve the lowest cost per unit of production.

Brief us on the solutions provided by TIL in the port sector?
TIL is engaged in the design, manufacture and marketing of a comprehensive range of port and material handling solutions, supported by an integrated after-sales support. Recognized as a market leader in mobile cranes and reach stackers, TIL’s product portfolio includes an extensive range of mobile cranes, lattice boom crawler cranes, reachstackers, container handlers, forklifts and RTG cranes, in addition to other products. In material handling equipment, we have global alliances with Grove worldwide and Manitowoc Cranes of USA, the Hyster-Yale Group – USA, and Paceco® Corp of USA.

What have been the market trends for reachstackers for the last couple of years and what are the key developments in port reachstacker market?
India presents a growing market for port and container handling equipment like reachstackers. With increasing containerization, development of dedicated logistics parks for handling containerized cargo and the growing thrust on developing container terminals along the east and west coasts of India, it is expected that significant new opportunities will open up for our reachstackers, which we offer in alliance with our global technology partner, Hyster®.

How do you assess the current and future market potential and expected growth? What are the growth drivers and what will be the CAGR from 2018 onwards?
The future looks reasonably bright for the material handling equipment segment in general and reach stackers in particular. The primary growth driver will be the Sagarmala Project that includes the creation of new ports in addition to the modernization of existing ones. With the increasing containerization and palletization taking place in the port sector, it is expected that the demand for reachstackers will improve significantly.

Please elaborate us on your range of reachstackers offered and unique features in terms of energy efficiency, safety, better productivity etc?
TIL has an exclusive partnership with Hyster-Yale Group, Inc. for marketing a range of reachstackers to customers in India, Nepal and Bhutan. The reachstackers are built at TIL’s factory in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India, as per Hyster design and stringent quality standards in line with those produced at Hyster’s Nijmegen plant in the Netherlands. Take, for example, the new Hyster-TIL® RS 45 launched at Excon 2017. To optimize effectiveness, the new truck features a powerful Cummins QSL9 Stage IIIA engine/Tier 3 in combination with a Spicer off-highway TE-27 transmission. In addition the machine features cooling-on-demand, load sensing hydraulics with Variable Displacement Pump (VDP) technology, automatic throttle-up, integrated power train and optional empty seat engine shutdown, which help to further reduce total fuel consumption.

The durable frame and boom have been developed using extensive analysis and testing with the RS45-31CH model giving 45 T in first row, 31T in the second row, and 15T in the third. The longer wheel base with 8% reduction in total weight results in extended tyre life. In addition, the local manufacturing by TIL provides distinct competitive
advantages to its customers – by reducing delivery lead times and improving total cost of ownership. Customers are also able to access door step aftermarket support through TIL’s pan-India distribution network.
