Early Days
We have been the first company to manufacture diesel engines in India with the common rail genset in 1997. There’s a fascinating story on how it all started. My grandfather, Dhanjishah B Cooper, was visiting the foundry when a man approached him with an old engine and said, “Sir, something has gone wrong with the cylinder head.” Could you please assist in resolving this? Dhanjishah completed the task successfully. Further, the company’s foreman and supervisor then persuaded Dhanjishah that if they could build a cylinder head, why not a full engine? So, my grandfather proposed that we build the engine.
In collaboration with Imperial Keighly and Duncan Stratton, the first diesel engines were produced in 1922. I recall the first model being a CR 14 with a compression ratio of 16.5:1, an RPM of 500, and a BHP of 14.
Evolution
We have recently introduced future-ready 5KVA compact diesel gensets in India which has the contemporary Air-cooled single-cylinder engine designed by Ricardo, UK. We have a technical collaboration with Ricardo, for designing its state-of-the-art family of engines that meet the current & forthcoming emission norms.
This collaboration offers the entire range of 2-cylinder to 6-cylinder diesel engines from 10 KVA to 250 KVA. Our engines are available in diesel and gas versions in sizes from 1.2 Liter to 7.8 Liter. Our engines have proven their performance efficiency on Gensets supplied to domestic and international markets. Our engines are being inducted in various other applications like Agriculture, Construction equipment, Marine, Automobiles, Pump, tractors, and more.
We have created the most compact gensets considering the evolving global markets, the diesel engine dates to the late 1800s. Off-road diesel engine technology improved gradually throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, with a constant improvement in power density and a progressive weight reduction. Turbocharging was one of the first important developments in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Charge air cooling was also important in increasing durability. Fuel injection pressure is important, which is why it has always been a priority, and it has been increasing well before the arrival of electronics. Electronic fuel injection revolutionized the construction equipment sector. As diesel engines have grown more integrated into machine designs, several OEMs have shifted to captive engines to offer engineered solutions. Diesel engines have greatly increased in power density, with comparable-sized engines producing amazing horsepower and torque when compared to their counterparts. Our engine models are known in the market for their compact size, best-in-class fuel efficiency and lowest maintenance costs
Future Technologies
From a single captive customer and manufacturing cylinder liners and aluminum parts to export and manufacturing cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, compacted graphite, aluminium pressure die casting, complex engines and gensets, Cooper has made significate inroads by boldly entering the bastion of multinationals. Over the years, Cooper Corporation has also not been dependent on migrant workers as we make the major components in house.
