What are your views on India as a global construction equipment manufacturing hub?

India is expected to surpass China as the second-largest player in the construction equipment (CE) market, as the country is expected to witness significant growth in infrastructure development projects over the next ten to fifteen years. With the government’s massive push to the infrastructure sector during the budget of 2022, the Construction Equipment industry in India is going to grow further.

Hosur is a global manufacturing hub for Terex and Terex continues to strengthen its foothold in India’s Construction Equipment Market by bringing in new technologies, expanding its product portfolio, and entering new construction territories. With the recent launch of its technologically advanced and internationally proven FRANNA brand of pick-and-carry mobile cranes, Terex is now making its presence in the highly competitive mobile crane segment dominated by local players.

Terex is proud to be associated with prominent projects like the Purvanchal Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Samruddhi Expressway, Z Mohr Tunnel, Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, and many more.

Give us details about your manufacturing facilities in India?

Terex started its India operations in Hosur in 2009 and now more than a decade later, the company enjoys a strong market presence through its various brands – Powerscreen, Finlay, Terex Minerals Processing Systems (MPS), and Terex Washing Systems (TWS), FRANNA, Terex Recycling Systems – all of which are providing optimum solutions to major infrastructure projects across India. I think we have come a long way since we first established our facility in India to becoming a global manufacturing hub and providing world-class equipment for Terex worldwide.

We have added new products to our portfolio and developed new variants, even during these challenging times, such as our Pick and Carry Cranes, which are being manufactured at our Hosur facility and will initially be for the Indian market, but we will also seek the opportunity to export them to markets in the neighbouring countries in the coming years.

We will also be launching a smaller range of crushing machines such as jaw crushers and impact crushers under our EvoQuip brand, in the 60, 70 and 80 ton/hour capacity, which can be transported on a small truck or trailer. These machines are being developed to cater to projects in the North-East and Himalayan regions as well C&D crushing very close to cities. Our aim is to offer an entire range of machines in various capacities from small, mid to high, which will be made in India to cater to road and mining sectors.

What are your company’s initiatives in skilling and training?

Trained manpower is one of the most crucial requirements in order to run any plant to the optimum capacity with minimum downtime. Unfortunately, our customers are experiencing a dearth of trained manpower due to the ever-rising demand for such talent. Terex has taken the initiative to run plant-operator training schools, throughout the year.

Trainings are being held both at the Hosur Plant and at key customer sites. Our endeavour is to ensure that operators understand the importance of safety at site and also the importance of scheduled plant maintenance. At the end of the training, operators undergo a test before they are given a certificate.

Tell us on your export market and important initiatives to cater to the requirement of International market?

Through extensive product innovation, we have grown multi-fold in the last 12 years, starting from four models in 2009 to more than 60 models in 2021, covering various brands. We have added new products to our portfolio and developed new variants during the past few years.

We introduced the latest industry 4.0 standards such as Telemetry across our equipment. Telemetry will provide customers with real time information on the performance of their Terex machines. We will soon begin development of state-of-the-art large capacity machines, which will further increase our capability to cater to the ever-growing demand for aggregates, and will also export them.

From an environmental perspective, we are excited to work with the Indian Government and various municipal corporations on waste management projects. We strongly believe that we can offer our expertise in recycling processes to make a real and lasting impact. We strive to provide sustainable solutions that aim to reduce the carbon footprint and our recently launched machines with fuel-efficient hybrid dual-powered technology will do just that.

We have a large team of design engineers based at our factory at Hosur and in our Global R&D center in Bangalore; they are constantly working on new models suited for the Indian conditions and as per the local requirements. We also transfer the existing products from our UK and USA factories and launch them in India. A lot of the products manufactured at the Hosur plant are being exported globally. We not only modify our machines for the Indian conditions, but also fully design them for India.

What are your future plans to cash-in the infrastructure boom in India?

Terex India has been self-reliant ever since it began its operations in India. Localisation has been a major initiative for us. Most of our machines are manufactured in our world-class manufacturing facility at Hosur in Tamil Nadu.

We are working on various new product development projects for India’s regional markets, with many new models in the pipeline for crushing, screening, washing, lifting, conveying, and recycling applications.

We have invested in a service field force through our dealers, as well as at our end. The idea again is to ensure that all our machines operate safely and with minimum downtime. These are some key points, apart from a well-designed, rugged, reliable product that differentiates us in the market.
