What is your future-outlook for the Indian construction and mining equipment manufacturers?

Off-Highway Research forecasts that the market for construction equipment will follow an upward trend in the long term. The Government’s emphasis on infrastructure development, remains with increased budget outlays. For instance, Rs 111 trillion NIP outlines the country’s infrastructure development strategy through 2025 with projects planned across all sectors. The road sector is the most important driver of construction equipment demand, followed by urban infrastructure, railways, and irrigation. Recent cabinet approval of the first river linking project (Ken-Betwa) will boost the equipment demand. Furthermore, two recent government initiatives, the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) and GatiShakti, will aid in project financing, integrated planning, coordination, and faster project execution.

The dwindling supply of sand as a construction resource has been well documented in the media for many years. As a result, manufactured sand – where the sand is derived from crushed rock fine – is proving to be sustainable and viable alternative for construction needs. Taking India as an example, historically most sand was dredged from rivers but in recent times, a government crack-down on the practice has led to a boom in manufactured sands. Due to numerous infrastructure projects the demand for superior quality manufactured sand is anticipated to rise exponentially. We are therefore excited about the opportunity for growth across solutions for sand manufacturing needs.

Give us an understanding of your company’s performance in the last 3 years?

Terex started its India operations in Hosur in 2009 and now more than a decade later, the company enjoys a strong market presence through its various brands – Powerscreen, Finlay, Terex Minerals Processing Systems (MPS), and Terex Washing Systems (TWS), FRANNA, Evoquip, Terex Recycling Systems – all of which are providing optimum solutions to major infrastructure projects across India. I think we have come a long way since we first established our facility in India to becoming a global manufacturing hub and providing world-class equipment for Terex worldwide. Terex is proud to be associated with prominent projects like the Purvanchal Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Samruddhi Expressway, Z Mohr Tunnel, Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, and many more.

CE manufacturers are now under pressure to manufacture machines which are not only cost effective, but also comply with the emission norms. What are your views on it?

We are committed to focusing on sustainable infrastructure development and strive to provide sustainable solutions that aim to reduce our overall carbon footprint and have recently launched machines with fuel-efficient hybrid dual-powered technology. Additionally, we are already using Stage IV emission compliant engines and prepared to take up any upcoming emission compliance requirements. From an environmental perspective, we are excited to work with the Indian Government and various municipal corporations on waste management projects and we strongly believe we can offer our expertise and know-how in recycling processes to make a real and lasting impact. The coal sector is also set to grow rapidly for the next few years, so while we already have a range of equipment which customers are currently using in their coal mines, we are also launching new models in Hybrid and dual powered machines, which will further help in reduction of fuel consumption.

What are the potential new areas for expansion and proposed new launches for the year 2023?

Terex continues to strengthen its foothold in India’s Construction Equipment Market by bringing in new technologies, expanding its product portfolio, and entering new construction territories. With the recent launch of its technologically advanced and internationally proven FRANNA brand of pick-and-carry mobile cranes, Terex is now making its presence in the highly competitive mobile crane segment dominated by well-established local players.

We will also be launching a smaller range of crushing machines such as jaw crushers and impact crushers under our EvoQuip brand, in the 60, 70 and 80 ton/hour capacity, which can be transported on a small truck or trailer. These machines are being developed to cater to projects in the North-East and Himalayan regions as well C&D crushing very close to cities. Our aim is to offer an entire range of machines in various capacities from small, mid to high, which will be made in India to cater to road and mining sectors.
