Managing Director, Shandong Heavy Industry India Pvt. Ltd.

What are the new developments in engines to cater to the new Bharat IV regulations which will come into effect in 2020?

We are ready with the BS 6/ Euro VI engines for the commercial vehicle segment. We are also geared with our engines to meet the proposed CEV 4 norms for engines powering on-road and off-road construction and earth moving equipment, as well as CPCB 4+ norms proposed for power generation.

How do you see the competition from larger companies such as Cummins who are ready with their products and have strong support from their US and European parents?

We have a very strong engine R&D base with over 2500+ qualified personnel. WEICHAI had migrated to the CRS platform way back in the year 2009 and ever since have been upgrading our engines with the ATS (after treatment systems) to meet the latest international emissions.

Incidentally, we are the world’s largest manufacturer of diesel and gas engines powering applications such as trucks and bus, earthmoving and construction, power generation, marine and a host of other applications. WEICHAI has maintained this No. 1 position competing with other leading brands for over a decade and is confident of continuing to do so.

What is the kind of promotional activities your company has undertaken to receive clients and increase market share in the engines segment?

While customers may tilt towards brands, they are now selective and performance conscious too. The fact that over 90,000 diesel engines for various applications supplied in India through our channel partners are operating successfully over a decade reveals the standing and acceptance of our esteemed clientele.  We have been steadily growing in this India market and are a brand to reckon with.

Have you enhanced your distributor and sales network for the purpose?

We have a fully established network for marine engines and enjoy a market share of over 50% in the India market. For other applications, we are strengthening our distributor and channel network, as well as charted out a road-map to indigenously manufacture the engines in India and cater to the south Asia market, as well as the Middle East & Africa in the future.

How was EXCON as an event for you, what were the highlights from the event in terms of sales and getting new or repeat clients?

We had an array of products including the power train comprising of the engine-gearbox-axle combos on display and engines/ gearboxes for various applications in addition to our LINDE hydraulic portfolio. We are one of the few who are in a position to offer complete drive train systems.

While we did not have a huge footfall with our stall positioned at one end in EXCON, we are pleased to have had entities with serious business interests visiting our stall. We hope to capitalize on this initial connect and look forward to enhance our business prospects through direct supplies or even looking for JV’s partners to derive success through a synergy platform.

What lies ahead for the Construction Equipment sector in Calendar 2020 given the slowdown in construction and overall economy?

There is bound to be a number of infrastructure and other large projects announced in India over the next decade that will propel the engineering Industry to grow in leaps, considering the huge requirements for mobility and other equipment to support the same. We are quite bullish and definitely intend to be part of this India growth story.
