Tarmat, the infrastructure construction company engaged in the building of highways and runways, undertook the herculean task of reconstructing the Cochin Airport runway. Considering the scope of work and a tight deadline to meet, the company overcame a number of challenges, especially adherence to safety norms during the course of the project. Jerry Varghese, Founder, Tarmat Ltd. reveals, “The reconstruction work of the Cochin airport runway was tough and demanding, which required meticulous planning and timely execution with stringent quality assurance.”

Process

The project required 3000 tons of asphalt mix to be placed daily in a five-hour working window. The resurfacing also included a profile correction of the runway at the airport, located in the city of Kochi in the state of Kerala, India. For the project, Tarmat utilised several key Ammann products, which included two Ammann ABC 140 ValueTec Asphalt-Mixing Plants and an Ammann sprayer.

The eight months tight deadline to execute the project came across as a sheer test of patience for the workforce at hand. Productive crew coupled with plant and machine uptime were a force to reckon with, which enabled Tarmat to achieve maximum results within the desired timeframe.“In spite of all the hurdles we faced, we were able to accomplish over 90 per cent of the work in nearly four months”, added Varghese.

Varghese attributes this significant achievement to the employees of Ammann India Private Limited, the sixth generation, family-owned business that produces asphalt and concrete mixing plants, compactors and asphalt pavers at nine production sites in Europe, China, India and Brazil. With core expertise is roadbuilding and transportation infrastructure, the company marked its 150th anniversary last year. Efficient utilization of time led to enhanced productivity and excellent results, which was a key success factor instrumental in the success of the Cochin Airport runway project. The dedicated Ammann team depicted exemplary teamwork that played a crucial role during the completion of the project.
