Gearmotors are specifically designed to stand up to the demanding conditions and harsh environments experienced in construction equipment and off road construction vehicle applications. Construction equipment and construction vehicle OEMs typically require quiet operating motors that remain reliable over a long life working in extreme environments. Equipment Times looks at the market trends, customer requirements, technology and future of gearmotors market.

A Gearmotor is a component whose mechanism adjusts the speed of the motor, leading them to operate at a certain speed. Gearmotor have the ability to deliver high torque at low speeds, as the gearhead functions as a torque multiplier and can allow small motors to generate higher speeds.

A Gearmotor can also be defined as a gear reducer because essentially, it is a combination of a speed reducer with a motor typically functioning as a gearbox, to reduce speed making more torque available.

Gearmotor can be classified based on the motor they are paired with, including bevel, helical, hypoid, spur and worm gears.

Each of these gears have advantages and disadvantages. For example, helical gears possess more torque capacity than spur gears, hence, generating less noise. Worm gears work efficiently in the low torque angel and are good for high speed reductions.

Different types of Gearmotors…

Gearmotors can be classified based on different elements. The two most common Gearmotors types are right angle Gearmotor and inline Gearmotor.

Right-angle Gearmotors use worm, bevel or hypoid gearing.

Inline Gearmotors typically use spur gears, helical or planetary gear sets.

Parallel shaft Gearmotors type helical gears.

Based on the internal disposition, Gearmotor can be classified as

Inline helical Gearmotors: The helical gear units are coaxial units where the gear unit output shaft is in-line with the motor shaft. The in-line helical motors are mostly used for slow speed/high torque applications.

Parallel shaft Gearmotor: This type of Gearmotor which uses gears to accomplish speed reduction. The motor shaft and the speed reducer shaft are on parallel planes in this specific Gearmotor.

The Parallel Shaft Gearmotor can use three types of gears to accomplish the transmission.

Spur Gears are widespread. The teeth on the gear wheel is straight and is parallel to the drive shaft of the speed reducer.

In Helical gears, the teeth are oblique to the axis of rotation. They transfer greater & power and speed and are relatively more silent and enduring.

Double helical gears are used to eliminate the axial thrust, the rotation is elicited by the shaft itself.

Though Gearmotors are almost a commodity with little room for differentiation, there is ample demand for Gearmotors from process as well as discrete industries.

Majority of the demand is attributed to growing industries, such as food & beverage and transportation & logistics.  Both benefit from megatrends, such as urbanization, rising wages, and changing consumer patterns, and are expected to push the market in the long run. Other industries, such as semiconductors, pharmaceutical & biotech, aerospace & defense, electric power generation, and water & wastewater will further drive the Gearmotors market during the forecast period.

Leading suppliers in the Gearmotor market are offering remote condition monitoring services, which enable the integration of the electromechanical component into the automation pyramid, lowering the lifecycle costs, using condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.  However, prices for this service offering need to be competitive before this is adopted as a widely used technology across end user industries.

Energy saving is another important aspect impacting the demand for Gearmotors. Most of the end users focus on lifecycle costs during their purchasing decisions.

Market propellers…

Determinants propelling the gear motors market involve developing wind power installations, the insignificant cost and compressed nature of gear motors, and growing concerns regarding the efficiency of mechanical power transmission. Gearmotors have augmented traction in recent years owing to their cost-effectiveness achieved through modular designing and adaptable usage. Whether it is industrial, mechanical, or any other kind of power transmission application, Gearmotors are deemed to be highly economical.

Technology…

Gearmotors have a number of advantages over other types of motor/gear combinations. Perhaps most importantly, gearmotors can simplify design & implementation by eliminating the step of separately designing and integrating the motors with the gears, thus reducing engineering costs.

Another benefit of gearmotors is that having the right combination of motor and gearing can prolong design life and allow for optimum power management and use.

Also, because gearmotors are integrated units, they eliminate the need for couplings and also eliminate any potential alignment problems. Such problems are common when a separate motor and gear reducer are connected together and result in more engineering time and cost as well as the potential for misalignment causing bearing failure and ultimately reduced useful life.

Though there are a number of different motor & gearbox combinations available not just any one will work for any application. Certain combinations are efficient & cost-effective than others. Knowing the application and having accurate ratings for the motor and gearbox is the foundation for successfully integrating a gearmotor into a system.
