Williams R. J. Managing Director, Hail Stone Innovations

How important is customer demand for green technology in driving your company’s innovation?

We have our ears on the ground and it is certainly our customers’ demands which drives our company’s innovation, not just in green technology but in the manufacturing of each of our products. Hailstone is into electrification and hybrid technology, big time as we understand that we have to drastically reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.  We have introduced electric-powered and hybrid crushing and screening equipment’s which reduces emissions and improve efficiency. We are also using idle-reduction technologies which are systems that reduce engine idling time, saving fuels and reducing emissions.

What are your thoughts on the regulatory landscape for green construction equipment, and how is your company preparing to meet these standards?

Governments and international bodies have been giving directions to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices. We are taking all steps to reduce emissions, increase fuel efficiency and we are also promoting use of alternative fuel and technologies. Our models – Track Mounted Series which have all these features are the fasting selling models now.

How does your company plan to continue innovating in the realm of sustainable construction equipment?

Hailstone is known for best-in-market innovation as we adopt a multifaceted approach in all our operations. Our research and development activities compliment our goals. All our partnerships are also in perfect alignment with our futuristic goals. Our continuous improvement in technology and processes ensure that we deliver innovative sustainable construction equipment.

Our strategic R & D initiatives include investment in advanced technologies and in making energy efficiency improvements in all products.  We are in the process of developing a range of fully electric and hybrid construction equipment to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

What challenges do you face in incorporating green technologies, and how are you addressing them?

Developing new green technologies involve significant investment in research & development, the new materials that are to be used are more expensive than traditional ones. Market pricing is also a matter of concern as the cost of the product gets escalated due to usage of expensive components. Passing on these costs to customers can make products less competitive in price-sensitive markets.

There are technological barriers like performance, reliability, infrastructure limitations and energy density to be handled. Keeping up with the evolving standards and certification processes is yet another challenge. The certification processes for new technologies can be complex and time consuming. Customers can be sceptical when it comes to switching to green technologies. We have to ensure that all stake holders are well educated about the benefits and use of new technologies.

How do you foresee the role of green technologies evolving in the construction equipment industry over the next decade?

Widespread adoption of electrification, advancements in battery technology, integration of renewable energy, development of alternative fuels, automation and AI, sustainable manufacturing practices are some of the factors which will drive the green technologies in the construction equipment industry over the next decade.
