What kind of construction equipment operator training and skilling is provided by your company?

Well-trained specialists are the key to the success for every company. With its professional range of training courses, Liebherr helps crane operators, dispatchers and also the crane contractor management teams to increase their expertise and ensure that they use mobile cranes safely and efficiently. Not only do we provide training courses at our production site in Ehingen, but also at other international training centres in Brazil, Australia, South Africa, USA and Italy. In India, Our expert service engineer provides the training to representative from purchaser as per the agreed working days. Liebherr India- Mobile and Crawler crane division has a training infrastructure in Kolkata, India as well.

How is the operator training program structured?

In March 2020, the training centre at Liebherr Werk Ehingen GmbH was awarded a certificate, which officially enables us to train crane operators for the new European Crane Operators Licence (ECOL). Today, we offer an extensive range of training courses for customers and personnel with an increasing number available online. There’s Face-to-Face training courses, Video tutorials, Live streaming and E-Learning available.

In the E-Learning course, through professionally prepared content the crane operator learns

how to safely operate a mobile crane. He’s shown how to plan and carry out quality-assured and efficient jobs – without putting anyone in danger.

Face-to-face training is a valuable part of Liebherr’s training programme. In theoretical and practical sessions, highly qualified and certified trainers explain the complex crane technology using cutaway models, demonstration objects, training cranes and with the help of multimedia. Face-to-face training is offered worldwide in various Liebherr training centres or at customer sites in some cases.

What specific topics are covered in the operator training program like equipment operation and controls, safety procedures and protocols, preventive maintenance etc.?

Our experienced Liebherr trainers deliver practical content, discuss real-life problems and provide answers to questions from everyday working life to ensure that the personnel receive the knowledge and skills they need. The operator training mainly covers cranes in general, physics, Load Charts, technology, Lifting loads in winds, preparations and checks before crane operation, safety systems, special operating conditions and behaviour in case of malfunction. Also, training simulators are used to train the operators in India.

How do you assess the effectiveness of your operator training programs?

Liebherr is internationally recognised as a world-class manufacturer of high technology construction equipment and cranes. The group prides itself on implementing and maintaining the highest quality standards in design, manufacture, after sales product support, training and safety.

The effectiveness of our training programs are assessed through feedback from the delegates.

How does your company provide periodic training courses for experienced operators?

Liebherr offers two ECOL courses – a 3-week course for mobile crane operators with at least 4 years of experience with a goal to train them in the safe use of mobile cranes according to ESTA guidelines. The training ends with a theoretical and practical final examination in English in front of a testing committee. Also, a 1-week course for mobile crane operators with at least 8 years of experience. We plan to begin operator trainings in India and provide them with license and certification for safe operation of the crane. We are trying to implement to issue these certificates under the logo of Skill India mission by Govt. of India.

How do you envision the future of operator training in the CE manufacturing industry? Are there any specific areas your company plans to focus on in the coming years?

Liebherr provides with training schemes designed by experts for the qualified crane specialists of tomorrow! Technical innovations have made mobile cranes more powerful, safer and also more efficient. Despite all the technology, we must not forget about the person operating it. The benefits of the new technologies can only be exploited to the full, if crane operators have received the appropriate training. We are planning Crane Planner customer training. There will be a 3 stage training concept. Stage 1 will be a free training based on videos. Stage 2 will be an e-learning with a significantly extended learning spectrum and stage 3 will be a face-to-face training in Ehingen.

What challenges do you face in providing effective operator training, and how do you overcome them?

With the world developing at a very fast pace, there are new projects coming up every day. This situation is demanding a continuous availability of machinery and skilled manpower at site leaving no time for training and upskilling of the crew.

Liebherr overcomes this challenge through digital means by providing videos on simple content or practical topics. Our Live streaming facility enables you to attend our courses regardless of where you are. Our E-Learning facility for individual learning can be utilised from anywhere and at any time.

Are there any opportunities for improvement or untapped areas in operator skilling that you believe could benefit the CE manufacturing industry?

Planning a heavy lift is a demanding task. But even supposedly simple lifting operations using mobile and crawler cranes can turn out to be more complicated than initially expected. Skilling an operator to plan a lift on Liebherr’s attractive three-dimensional interface, the Crane Planner 2.0 will train him to plan a job in advance, comfortably execute it in real world. The Crane Planner 2.0 integrates the exact machine data of the load moment limitation (LML / LICCON). The data displayed in Crane Planner 2.0 are determined by exactly the same calculation logic as the live data of the real mobile and crawler cranes. At the same time, important key figures such as ground bearing pressures, ground force, loads and centres of gravity are determined. A new calculation is carried out with every change in configuration, load or geometry.
