Thanks to the innovative use of construction methodology like precise and pre-stressed planks for super structures and innovative method of mobilization of men and machinery, KNR Construction completes the four-laning of Walayar – Vadakkancherry section in Kerala ahead of schedule. NHAI has also recognized this achievement by awarding ‘Best Project completed ahead of Schedule’ for this project.
Exemplary Evidence of Innovation
In any project, cross drainage structures including minor and major bridges are important. Execution of these structures is considerably time consuming needing special attention and prior planning for timely completion of the road project. KNR adopted innovative precast techniques for the execution of super structure of the minor bridges. System of precast pre-stressed planks was successfully used for optimizing time and this paved way for early completion of the project.
Exemplary Evidence of Time Saving
KNR completed the premier road project six months ahead of schedule in the State of Kerala which is unprecedented till date. The situation in Kerala generally is a deterrent for progress of works as construction is generally difficult and completion schedule cannot be adhered to effectively for many reasons beyond the control of the contractors. KNR thoroughly studied the situation and made itself equipped with what all might be necessary for adhering to the schedule of completion. KNR mobilized machinery more than what was contemplated originally for completing the project ahead of schedule. The company deployed three crushers of cumulative capacity of 650MT per hour in order to effectively manage the requirement of stone aggregate required for the project. Similarly two hot mix plants of combined capacity of 400MT were deployed for executing bituminous layers (DBM & BC). The success of the project is matching capacities of crushers and hot mix plants.
Evidence of Safety Standards
Safety is imbibed in the minds of KNR employees. Safety is further more important in upgradation of existing two lane roads where execution of work is seen parallel to the existing road where traffic is plying. In such situations extra ordinary care of the machines should be taken as any incident of accident involving the machine would hamper the progress of works due to limitation in the availability of machine resources. Heavy machines such as sensor pavers are unique machines to be carefully handled during the execution. Specific care is taken while parking these machines so that no incident would occur due to interference of traffic.
Evidence of Cost Savings through Strategic Approaches
We deployed effective PROs at site for assisting the project manager for tackling any unforeseen situation involving local public affecting progress of works. Due to more awareness, intervention of public is a general deterrent seriously crippling the pace of works and we needed effective counter management system so that the issues are addressed in an optimum fashion with minimum intervention in the progress of works. Any issue unattended would be heavily damaging prospects of timely completion and our readiness and willingness of the public to understand made us sail through the situations with reasonable support from the NHAI and other government agencies as well.
- Evidence of resource utilization & capacity optimization skills of sustainability: Completion of the project ahead of schedule itself is the evidence of resource utilization and capacity optimization skills of sustainability.
The four-laning of Walayar – Vadakkancherry section (Km.182.250 to Km.240.000 of NH-47) – Package NS-2/BOT/KL-2 in the State of Kerala was completed by KNR Constructions, for the concessionaire for the DBFOT Project, Tollways Private Limited. KNR executed 28.2 lakh cum of earthwork, 2.9 lakh cum of GSB, 3.42 lakh cum of WMM, 2.0 lakh cum of bituminous items and more than 1.0 lakh cum of concrete in the project. The total requirement of aggregate was about 22 lakh MT. KNR could accomplish all this rare achievement only with exemplary performance of its resources, state of art machinery and dedicated manpower. The appointed date for the project is 18.05.2013 and scheduled completion date was 13.11.2015. The project cost is Rs.790.6 crore. KNR could complete project before schedule in all respects on 14.10.2015, though Provisional Completion with 87% completion was issued on 18.05.2015 and the commercial operations could be commenced on 23.05.2015 almost six months ahead of schedule. NHAI has also recognized this achievement by awarding ‘Best Project completed ahead of Schedule’ for this project.
