Terasurfacing is a sustainable road construction technology that is gaining popularity in India due to its cost-effectiveness and durability. The Indian Government’s Waste to Wealth program is aimed at promoting sustainable practices and reducing waste by using waste materials in construction. Terasurfacing is a cutting-edge method that builds stronger, more sustainable roads out of industrial waste materials. As a by-product of the steel production process, processed steel slag aggregate is used in the process. This waste is converted into a product that can be used to build roads, offering a more sustainable and environmentally responsible option to conventional building materials.
Terasurfacing can significantly lessen the carbon footprint of road building, which is one of its many advantages. The process greatly lowers the quantity of waste produced by construction activities by utilising industrial waste materials.
Satish Pandey, Principal Scientist at CSIR-CRRI, recently conducted a terasurfacing trial at Hazira Port Road, Surat, using the UNISURFACE8000 machine from Alltech. The project involved terasurfacing of around 7500 sq. m of road with a thickness of 8-10 mm.
Challenges
Terasurfacing is new for Indian Roads and The Hazira Port Road was in a state of disrepair due to heavy vehicular traffic and was in urgent need of repair. The challenge was to provide a durable and sustainable solution that would also reduce waste by utilizing waste materials in the terasurfacing mix. Also, a reliable and quality machine which can help to put only 8-10 mm of terasurfacing on road
Solution
Mr. Pandey decided to use the UNISURFACE8000 machine from Alltech Industries India Pvt Ltd for the terasurfacing trial. The machine uses a combination of steel slag aggregate with emulsion and adhesives to create a smooth and durable surface. For the terasurfacing mix, Mr. Pandey utilized waste materials such as steel slag, which is considered as a waste from indsutries. These waste materials were mixed with emulsion and used as a binder for the terasurfacing mix.
Results
The terasurfacing trial at Hazira Port Road was a success, and the road is now much smoother and more durable than before. The UNISURFACE8000 machine from Alltech proved to be very effective in creating a smooth and uniform surface, and the terasurfacing mix using waste materials provided a cost-effective and sustainable solution. The trial also showed that the use of waste materials in road construction can reduce waste and provide a more sustainable solution. Moreover, roads can be opened after only 20-25 minutes of laying.
Conclusion
The terasurfacing trial at Hazira Port Road is an excellent example of the Indian Government’s Waste to Wealth program in action. The use of waste materials in road construction provides a sustainable solution that also reduces waste. The UNISURFACE8000 machine from Alltech is an effective tool for creating smooth and durable terasurfacing, and the trial conducted by Mr. Satish Pandey has shown that sustainable road construction is not only possible but also cost-effective. Also, it lowers down the stop time of road after paving which is only 20-25 minutes by using Terasurfacing.
