What inspired your company to develop training and skilling initiatives for construction equipment operators?
Indian construction industry is modernizing at a fast pace and this has generated the need to develop a workforce of skilled operators who have a good understanding of the machine as well as the machine application to maximise output and efficiency. As a manufacturer of advanced compaction and paving technologies in Dynapac we put the user knowhow at the top for best results from our equipment. This has generated interest in the IESC strategy of skilling operators and mechanics both for the industry.
New product are now driven with digital technology wherein we can control parameters in a more accurate manner that will deliver excellent results in laying roads. The know-how Dynapac wants to develop in the country is that of understanding various functionality in the operator’s space as well as knowing what to use for the job at hand. This is achieved with a well-structured program which starts with explaining the technology behind our compaction equipment followed by functionalities that will help do better jobs.
Briefly outline the objectives and goals of your training programs for operators. Could you describe the structure and format of your training programs?
Dynapac created a compaction simulator as we feel that it is important for the operators to feel the control system in a virtual world that is safe and allows mistakes for early learners. Once the operator understands that functionality then the training is more hands on in actual jobsite situation. A good combination of practical training with theorical input behind the functionality helps train the team to achieve good confidence on the machines.
The IESC program for compaction has already been launched and we are enrolling participants for year 2024 – 25 to ensure we can deliver a good number of operators to the industry. We also have created refresher courses for existing operators that will help operators from the industry improve their skills and update their know how on the new range of compaction equipment and features being offered to the industry.
What challenges or gaps have you identified in their skill sets?
Among the various skills that we deal with for compaction equipment, the basic skill is understanding application of soil and asphalt compaction so that we use the right settings and compaction process for optimum results. The number of compaction equipment in operation in India is quite large and when we do the compaction work in an efficient way we can make a significant impact to quality as well as carbon footprint from this activity.
In addition, the compaction machines are heavy and we feel a strong focus on safety is a must in these training program to make the jobsites secured. Every product training starts with a complete overview of the safety parameters that needs to be understood before we start with operation.
