In a significant milestone that strengthens India’s growing leadership in advanced rail technology, BEML celebrated the flagging off of its 2100th manufactured metro coach at its state-of-the-art Rail coach unit in Bengaluru.

In a significant milestone that strengthens India’s growing leadership in advanced rail technology, BEML celebrated the flagging off of its 2100th manufactured metro coach at its state-of-the-art Rail coach unit in Bengaluru. The flagging-off ceremony was graced by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh (MP), Dr. Mohan Yadav, who also formally handed over the land allotment letter to Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML, for the establishment of a new rolling stock manufacturing unit for mainline and urban mobility in Umeria, Raisen District, MP. The event was attended by senior officials from the Madhya Pradesh government, Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC), and BEML.
The Government of MP has granted approval for the allocation of 60.063 hectares for the upcoming manufacturing facility. This new unit will specialize in producing rolling stock and metro coaches for future railway and urban transit projects both within Madhya Pradesh and across India. This strategic expansion will not only strengthen BEML’s manufacturing presence but is also poised to drive regional industrial growth and generate significant employment opportunities.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said, “This moment marks a significant milestone—not only for the people of Madhya Pradesh but for the nation at large. The rollout of BEML’s 2100th metro coach stands as a powerful reflection to India’s growing stature in advanced manufacturing, engineering excellence and indigenous technology development. We are equally proud to usher in a new chapter with the formal handover of the land allotment for BEML’s upcoming facility in Raisen district in MP. This forward-looking initiative will play a pivotal role in enhancing Madhya Pradesh’s industrial ecosystem, while creating meaningful opportunities for youth, MSMEs, and local communities—strengthening the foundations of inclusive and sustainable growth.”
The 2100th Metro coach, built for Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), represents the latest in driverless technology, compliant with Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) standards. Equipped for Unattended Train Operation (UTO), the coach includes state-of-the-art safety systems and smart features designed to meet global benchmarks.
Commenting on the dual milestone, BEML CMD Shantanu Roy stated, “We are deeply grateful to the Chief Minister for placing his trust in BEML and allotting land for the establishment of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh. This strategic move will significantly contribute to the expansion of the nation’s rail infrastructure and the advancement of urban mobility solutions. Crossing the milestone of 2100 manufactured metro coaches is a powerful testament to the continued trust our partners place in BEML, and to our unwavering commitment to innovation, engineering excellence, and self-reliance. This achievement not only reinforces our role in strengthening India’s infrastructure but also supports regional industrialization and employment generation. With this momentum, we are fully geared to manufacture world-class rail and metro coaches—not just for India, but for the global market.”
A standout innovation on this trainset is the Onboard Condition Monitoring System—the first of its kind in India.
This system integrates five high-tech modules for real-time automatic monitoring of:
- Rail track conditions
- Overhead equipment (OHE)
- Pantograph-OHE interaction
- Arc detection
- Rail profile analysis
These advancements enable predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics directly from the depot’s control centre, setting a new benchmark in Indian metro operations. Beyond its technical superiority, the new metro coach offers a modern commuter experience—with ergonomic interiors, dynamic route maps, CCTV surveillance, digital fire detection, advanced air conditioning, and even a dedicated cycle stand—blending functionality with passenger-centric design.
BEML’s metro journey began with the RS1 project for DMRC in the early 2000s.
