Wirtgen is the market leader in surface mining and road technology business with a wide range of advanced technology products. “Wirtgen is the only manufacturer covering a scope of performance ranging up to 3,000 tonnes per hour with direct loading by conveyor belt,” says
P Ramesh, Managing Director & CEO, Wirtgen India. Ramesh speaks about the advantages of selective mining. Excerpts from the interview

Could you brief us on selective mining and solutions offered by Wirtgen?

Selective mining considerably reduces equipment, labor and time requirements as well as overburden volumes. Surface miners extract primary resources in a selective operation, achieving high degrees of purity and maximizing exploitation of the deposits. With our machine technology, we also constantly endeavor to keep environmental pollution as low as possible.

A Wirtgen surface miner is a perfect example of this philosophy: it impresses with its environmentally friendly technology as it cuts, crushes and loads rock in a single operation. A tremendous advantage of selective mining is that the vibration less mining operation without drilling and blasting is accompanied by low levels of dust and noise. The low environmental impact also permits maximum utilization of the deposit right up to the edge of residential areas.

The selective mining of high-quality materials requires considerably less space than conventional mining methods. Our fuel-efficient, intelligently controlled engines comply with the strictest exhaust emission standards, thus making our surface miners very reliable.

Brief us on the advantages of surface miners and which verticals are expected to drive the demand for the same?

Wirtgen is the market leader in surface mining, offering a technically mature product portfolio for opencast mining which has been tried and tested in operations around the globe. Wirtgen surface miners offer cutting widths ranging from 2.20 m to 4.20 m and cutting depths of between 20 cm and 83 cm. Wirtgen is the only manufacturer covering a scope of performance ranging up to 3,000 tonnes per hour with direct loading by conveyor belt.

Wirtgen surface miners cut primary resources such as coal, gypsum, iron ore, salt, phosphate, bauxite, limestone or granite, achieving high degrees of purity in the process. They are increasingly used as primary extraction equipment also in newly opened-up opencast mines or extensions of existing opencast mine operations.

What is the growth potential for Kleeman range of crushers for mining & quarrying applications?

In the road technology business we are the clear market leaders globally and also in India. We are the market leaders in terms of innovation and market share. The biggest opportunity for us lies in the crushing and screening segment. It is now 10 years since we acquired the Kleemann brand and now we are slowly, building on our existing strengths in the road segment, to get into the crushing and screening market. Since 2015, we are producing the Kleemann screens in our Pune manufacturing facility for the world market.

Due  to  the  large number   of  new  road  projects  being  rolled  out, there  is a  sudden  demand  for construction   and  road  building  equipment  and  with  this  the  demand  for aggregates is  also  increasing  where  green field  projects  and  expansion  from  2  to  4  lanes and  4 to  6  lanes is  being  taken  up . This   has boosted the demand for crushing and screening   units.  Also  the  development  in road  and  rail  sector  will  see a huge surge in demand  for  aggregates for  construction. The new urban infrastructure projects also add up to the demand for aggregates and consequently for crushing and screening equipment.

Globally the focus is more on energy-efficient mining equipment.  What contributory role Wirtgen is playing in India, especially through product and support solutions?

Crushing and screening plants from Kleemann – a Wirtgen Group Member company are characterized by their excellent customer benefits. The decisive elements for success such as technology, innovation, quality and service combine to make Kleemann like no other company. The plants are distinguished mainly by their sophisticated and detailed solutions which keep constant track of the entire process.

Kleemann crushing plants have several innovations like the CFS – Continuous Crusher Feed System; diesel – electric drive; crusher de-blocking system etc. Like the mobile crushing plants, the screens are characterized by short set-up times, particularly good transport properties, as well as high performance. They can be used flexibly and are particularly suitable for use at frequently changing work sites.

How geared up is Wirtgen in the aftermarket support space?

We provide worldwide service and on-site application support. Therefore, optimal customer care and performance and also availability of the parts are guaranteed at all times. In India we have built an independent Kleemann sales and service setup to have exclusive focus on this product and we already have several installations in operation in the country.
