Hyundai launched app based remote management tool which helps track the performance parameters of the machine.

What is the impact of telematics and data driven solutions in bringing down fuel consumption and enhancing productivity?
Telematics has started gaining acceptance from the customers on account of location tracking and alerts for maintenance and machine breakdown. Internet connectivity issues, cost of service provider, lack of motivation of usage to customer in terms of discount in insurance premium or extended warranty cost and training to end user about the system usage for informed decision making are the major bottlenecks in wider acceptability of the technology.

Understanding the above issues, Hyundai Construction Equipment launched app based remote management tool which would not only track the performance parameters of the machine but also allow customers to create their own hierarchy of login ID’s with limited access to the site and operation team.

Currently this system is optional for SMART series and is standard for 9 series of excavators. We are creating customer awareness program to demonstrate the benefits of this technology and slowly offer the same as a standard feature for all our machines.

Since there is a greater acceptance of ‘operator’ as a vital link in the whole system, correspondingly how the design trends have evolved, especially the cab design?
We, at Hyundai, always believe that the machine operator is a key stakeholder in the whole system of value chain. It is because of this belief; we have launched all our machines ranging from 14T and above with standard airconditioned cabin. In the SMART series of machines, we have also improved the ducting layout of air conditioner for improved air distribution and have enhanced seat adjustment for ease of operation.

Hyundai machines are equipped with CAPO(Computer Aided Power Optimization) and digital coloured cluster for better understanding of various operating parameters which improves the operational efficiency of the operator and thereby the productivity of the machine.

What is the demand-supply scenario of excavators and what is the CAGR expected and the growth drivers?
After consistent decline for about three years after 2011, excavator demand showed marginal growth of around 8% in 2015 over 2014. The growth, however, in 2016 has been very strong. It was majorly driven by new project announcements and speeding of existing projects in road sector. The demand in 2016 grew by more than 45% over 2015. The demand continued to be strong in 2017 on the back of government’s focus on speed of making roads. The demand in 2017 grew by around 22% over the same period in 2016.

To make the growth sustainable and balance out supply issues for specific segment of machines, other sectors like irrigation, railways, urban development and mining should start showing some visible improvement on the ground.

What are the major challenges the CE industry is facing in today’s context?
Currently the key challenge with CE industry is the availability of components from local suppliers. Some key suppliers being common to many of the OEM’s are facing issues of scaling up production as their vendors are not geared up for the sudden increase in demand of machines.
