MD & CEO,
Premium Transmission.

Our focus is to expand our network both in India as well as the global market.

Premium Transmission is one of the leading players in industrial gearboxes, geared motors and fluid coupling market of India. The company further plans to expand its footprint both in India and globally, and has geared up to provide end-to-end solution characterized by precision and innovation. “We are constantly working towards improving ourselves to create the future we visualise – that is to position the company as a pioneer in the industrial gearboxes, geared motors and fluid couplings segment, states Neeraj Bisaria, MD & CEO, Premium Transmission. Excerpts from the interview

How do you assess the growth prospects for high quality, precision-engineered power transmission products and solutions?

Today, a strong focus on the infrastructure needs of the country as well as affordable housing from the government has resulted in a boost for core industry segments like steel and power. Coupled with the growth of other supporting sectors, it will further lead to exceptionally good growth prospects for a mechanical power transmission company like Premium.

Premium has a ‘stated objective’ of widening the international market penetration. Could you tell us the road map for the same?

We already have a significant presence in Europe owing to our German operations along with a good sales volume in the SEA market through our dealer and distribution network. We are now planning to enhance our presence in the Middle East, Africa, and American market with technical and commercial alliances with prominent players in respective geographies.

Could you elaborate on the new technology centre and the progress in terms of innovative products on the board?

At Premium, innovation and technology is what drives us ahead and is a part of our DNA as a company. We have recently opened a new development centre in Kolkata. It focuses on developing engineering platforms for enhancing our current industry offerings and more importantly designing for the industries where we have very limited products or no product available.

What do you think the major growth drivers in India?

The major growth driver in India has always been the internal demand cycle of the country. Due to the strong push on the infrastructural development in all the states, there has been an   increase in purchasing power. This has further resulted in lower and middle level growth driven small and micro financing. The Indian market has shown strong fundamentals on economic KPIs and I believe the same will continue.

Could you elaborate on the product and technology trends in gearboxes, geared motors etc in India? Has the proposed stringent emission norms has any bearing on aggregate manufacturers like Premium?

We are not under the automotive category at all so the emission norms do not affect us in any manner. The industrial gear box segment is making a shift towards Helical and Planetary gear boxes with high power to torque ratios which are also cost efficient both in price and the cost of running.  As one of the key players in the industry, our focus has always been to develop best in-class products. Premium’s Technology Centre in Pune and Development Centre in Kolkata is well-equipped and working aggressively to meet the current as well as future demands.

What has been the impact of telematics and big data analytics  on aggregate suppliers like Premium?

Telematics and analytics are shaping the future of business and have been transforming industries. Premium is ready to meet this demand along with our IOT partners as we have always believed that constant innovation and advancement is necessary to excel.

How have you been able to leverage the benefits of the digital platforms in your production processes and products and down the value chain?

Digital platforms and automation have helped us to a substantial extent in improving our productivity and reducing process variation, which improves our product quality and makes it more cost efficient for us.

What do you think about the scope for Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) and concepts like AR (augmented reality)?

Premium is the front-runner in the industrial gearboxes segment, and in order to progress further we have a 3D printing facility in our technology centre. This is enabling us to do the simulation and do faster designs. Additive manufacturing is making our complex designs simpler to produce and use at a later stage by our customers.

Back-up / aftersales support has become a true differentiator irrespective of the industry segments. How have you addressed this in terms of augmenting and enhancing the efficiency factor?

Not only the after sales support but more so, the maintenance of the industrial gear box at regular intervals is of utmost important for a longer life cycle of the product. Premium has recently opened a world-class service centre in Pune. We will continue to expand our service offerings in different parts of India and in other continents, not only for the gearboxes manufactured by Premium but also by other industry players from India and abroad.

What do you think the major challenges your industry facing?

In my opinion, some of the major challenges in the industry are lack of skill and supply chain issues that retard growth.

Give us a brief on your manufacturing facilities, investment, and
road map?

We have a 50 plus year legacy in India and we plan to reinvent ourselves in the coming future. We are constantly working towards improving ourselves to create the future we visualise – that is to position the company as a pioneer in the industrial gearboxes, geared motors and fluid couplings segment.  At present, we have manufacturing units in India, based in Pune, Kolkata and Aurangabad.  Our focus is to expand our network both in India as well as the global market.
